Description

Just after midnight on 6 June 1944, three Horsa gliders landed in a field next to the bridge over the Caen canal at Bénouville to deliver soldiers whose task was to capture the bridge intact in advance of the D-Day landings a few hours later.  Pilots Jim Wallwork and John Ainsworth, in the lead glider PF800 ’91’ carefully flew the briefed approach after being released by the Halifax tug and managed to stop their 4 ton glider just a few yards from the bridge, in complete darkness on a totally unprepared field.  This feat has been described as the finest piece of flying of WW2 and it is hard to disagree with that.

This new print shows Wallwork and Ainsworth about to touch down in the first glider with the bridge dead ahead.
