This painting depicts three Lancasters of the newly formed 617 Squadron low in the northern hills on 16th April 1943. Leading is Guy Gibson in ED763 AJ-D, on the left is Joe McCarthy in LM309 AJ-X and on the right is ‘Dinghy’ Young in ED756 AJ-H The flight was over 5 hours and took them as far north as Inverness before returning through the Lake District. The purpose of the sortie was to carry out dummy attacks on lakes en-route.
